Ponda: Sugarcane farmers associated with the Sanjivani Sugar Mill received the first instalment, 80 per cent (Rs 3.7 crore) compensation, under the Special Assistance Scheme to Sugarcane Cultivators, reports The Times of India.

As many as 282 sugarcane farmers will be benefited from this as the state government has released Rs 3.7 crore for them. The compensation was announced by the government to the 700-plus farmers for five years after the closure of the Dharbandora-based sugar mill in 2019.

The majority of the beneficiary farmers are from Sanguem while others are from Quepem, Dharbandora and Pernem.

Factory administrator Satej Kamat said that the sanctioned amount has been deposited in the bank accounts of the respective farmers and the remaining 20% compensation would be released soon.

The government should consider the highest quantity of cane supplied by farmers to the sugar mill was the demand made by the All Goa Sugarcane Cultivators’ Association in its meeting on August 31, 2021. The highest quantity supplied by farmers was 47,069 tonnes during the 2017-18 crushing season.
