Goa: Sugarcane farmers demand pending dues

Ponda: Sugarcane farmers associated with the Sanjivani Sugar Mill threatened to go on an indefinite strike on Thursday if the government fails to clear their pending dues by December 6, reports Herald Goa.

Farmers protested outside the office of the Administrator for their demands.

Farmers stated that they are not sure about when the government will set up an ethanol plant through the Agriculture Department as they have been asked not to cultivate sugarcane.

The farmers had held a meeting on November 12 in which they had warned to stage a dharna on November 24 for their pending dues and not getting clarity over the starting of the ethanol plant at the sugar mill. Farmers had gathered for agitation at the Administrator’s office on Thursday but he was not present to address their issues.
