Goa: Sugarcane farmers intensify agitation

Poinguinim, Goa: Sugarcane farmers have intensified their agitation for the compensation of the standing crops. Around 200 sugarcane farmers gathered in front of the deputy collector’s office under the banner of Uss Utpadhak Sangarsh Samiti and have demanded the written assurance from the government compensating their standing crop at Rs 3,600 per tonne till Sanjivani sugar factory becomes operational.

The sugarcane farmers have stated that they are upset with the government as it failed to reply to their memorandum sent on December 23 for which they had set a deadline of 10 days.

Kushta Gaonkar, chairman of the samiti, said that the farmers will continue the agitation till the government gives them written assurance of solving their demands.

According to the news report published in The Times of India, Deputy chief minister Chandrakant Kavlekar appealed the agitating farmers to give time till Tuesday for a solution and that he would take up the matter with the chief minister.
