Goa: Sugarcane farmers withdraw their agitation

Ponda, Goa: The sugarcane farmers associated with the Sanjivani sugar mill that were agitating under the leadership of Rajendra Desai have withdrawn their agitation after they got assurance from deputy chief minister Babu Kavlekar to arrange a meeting with the Chief Minister to discuss their issues. The farmers will now meet CM on Friday afternoon to discuss their grievances.

According to the media report, the Deputy CM also promised to clear payment Rs 600 per tonne labour charges towards sugarcane harvesting.

Earlier the farmers had launched a protest at the sugar mill premises accusing that the government is not taking note of their grievances and clearing its stand on the future of sugar mill. The farmers had decided to not withdraw their agitation till the government gives them a written assurance about the future of the sugar mill and had planned a human chain on Wednesday.
