Government releases additional 1 LMT sugar quota for October 2023

In a notification issued on October 13, the government has allocated an additional 1 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of sugar quota for October’s domestic sales.

Earlier, the government had released sugar quota of 13 LMT and 15 LMT in two tranches. Therefore, the total quota for the month of October now stands at 29 LMT.

The Food Ministry had allocated a 25 LMT monthly sugar quota to sugar mills for September 2023, whereas a 23.5 LMT monthly sugar quota was released for domestic sale in October 2022.

According to the market experts, with the festive season approaching, the government has increased the quota by 1 LMT to keep sugar prices under control. The government is committed to ensuring sugar is available to domestic consumers at a reasonable price.

As per notification, “Opening stock as on 11-10-2023 Plus (+) Production up to 31st October, 2023 minus (-) Domestic dispatch from 11-10-2023 to 30-10-2023 not exceeding the quantity as mentioned in column (4) of the table in notification against respective sugar mill.”

Violation of this order will result in penalties under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, as amended from time to time.

Permission to sell the quota is valid until October 31, 2023, with all other terms and conditions remaining the same as per the order of Monthly Stock Holding Limit for October 2023, issued on October 10.
