GPS cane survey in Meerut to ensure accuracy

Meerut: This year, the cane survey in Meerut district will be conducted entirely using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to eliminate any errors. The GPS-based survey has already begun in the Sakoti and Kinauni sugar mill areas, and it will commence in the remaining mills from May 1st onwards. The survey will cover both planted cane and verify the area under ratoon cane, reported Live Hindustan.

The Cane Department of Uttar Pradesh conducts an annual cane survey in mill areas to determine the cane acreage and variety. For this purpose, joint cane survey teams are formed by the sugar mills and the Cane Department. The cane survey work for the crushing season 2024-25 has already commenced, and it is scheduled to be completed by June 30th.

The cane survey work has also begun in Meerut district. District Cane Officer Dr Dushyant Kumar informed that the cane survey teams have been trained and provided with survey materials. Kinauni and Sakoti sugar mills have already started the cane survey. The survey will also commence in the remaining mills of the district – Daurala, Mohiuddinpur, Mawana, and Nanglamal – from May 1st onwards.

The survey will be conducted using GPS-equipped Hand-Held Computers (HHC) devices. The area of planted cane fields will be measured based on the four-corner measurements of the plot and transmitted to the departmental server. Additionally, the area under the ratoon cane will be verified.
