Indonesia plays a vital role in the international sugar market. The ups and down in Indonesia sugar industry affects the global market upto some extent. Recently, according to Katadata.co.id, Indonesia had become the largest sugar importer in the world.
Acting Director-General of Agro-industry of the Industry Ministry Achmad Sigit Dwiwahjono commented that recommendation on the import of raw sugar would be issued based on the industry demand.
According to the report in Antaranews.com, Dwiwahjono said, “Recommendation will be issued based on the demand of the industry. We are now verifying which industries need (raw sugar), and we will see their supply.”
“The demand of raw sugar for the food and beverage industry is expected to reach 3.6 million tonnes in 2019. However, the government has decided to import 2.8 million tonnes, as the food and beverage industry has a supply of some 800 thousand tonnes of raw sugar for this year`s production” he further added.
Based on the data, Indonesia ranked first as the world’s largest sugar importer for the period of 2017-2018, with an import volume of 4.45 million tonnes, reported Katadata.co.id.
Earlier, media reported that Indonesia is interested in buying sugar from India but wants latter to cut import duty on refined palm oil and the sweetener substantially to 45 per cent and 5 per cent, respectively.
