Kazakhstan plans to lower sugar imports by 32 per cent

The Kazakhstan government has focused on increasing the domestic sugar production from 7 per cent to 43 per cent which will help the country to reduce sugar imports by 32 per cent, said the Agricultural minister Yerbol Karashukeyev.

According to the local media reports, he said that the sugar-beet production is likely to increase from 332,000 tons to 1.8 million tons as we have resolved the issues of water supply and have increased the area under cultivation from 14,500 ha to 38,000 ha. This will help us in increasing the sugar output to sevenfold up to 254,000 tons which will ultimately lower the sugar imports by 32 per cent.

“The yearly sugar consumption in Kazakhstan is 532,000 tons and 7 per cent of it comes from domestic production but this is likely to change soon as we are increasing domestic production,” minister further added.
