Kazakhstan to increase area under sugar beet cultivation

The area under sugar beet cultivation in Kazakhstan has increased to 6.1 thou ha in 2022, from 5.6 thou ha in the preceding year, according to the regional administration office, Zhambyl.

The region had made 16.33 thou tons of sugar beet producing 310.9 c/ha last year. The sugar beet output in the Zhambyl region was at 171.0 thou tons in 2017 and 2021.

The government has taken up the plan to modernize the sugar industry and the Kazakh Agriculture Ministry is working on it. It plans to expand sugar beet cultivation areas to 60 thou ha to regulate and support the sugar industry.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev had earlier asked the government to ensure smooth operations of the sugar plants. As per the Head of State, four of the seven sugar plants are now operational.

Kazakhstan’s largest sugar beet production units are located in the Zhambyl region and there are several sugar beet processing plants in the region.
