Kenya: Amid coronavirus sugarcane farmers demand cane dues

Muhoroni: Sugarcane farmers from Muhoroni, Kenya, have demanded the pending arrears around sh250 million from the mills amid coronavirus. Management had earlier appealed cane growers to give time to source fund.

The farmers have stopped sending cane to the mill and have asked the government to take action against the joint receiver managers.

Kenya Sugarcane Growers Association (Kesga) secretary-general Richard Ogendo said, “The mill has not paid payments to both farmers and mill workers from last one year and both the current receiver managers Francis Ooko and Harun Kirui are not seen in the mill frequently.”

According to the media report, Ooko refuted the claims made by farmers and said that he was involved in an accident while on duty and was given permission to do lighter duties as he recovers.
