Kenya: Farmers associated with Nzoia Sugar agitate over pending cane dues

Sugarcane farmers that have sold their cane to the Nzoia Sugar Company plan to launch an agitation for their pending cane dues.

Christopher Sifuna, chairman, Nzoia Outgrowers Company said that from the last seven months the company has not paid the farmers even after crushing the cane and selling sugar.

The farmers had given 14 days ultimatum to the company two weeks ago to clear their payment but they have not yet received any payment from the company.

Nzoia Sugar managing director Michael Makokha on Sunday defended the company, saying his regime is not to blame for the non-payment. He heaped blame on the previous regimes, saying they are still paying arrears accumulated over the years.
