Kenya: Sugar industry struggles; Governor asks to increase sugarcane production

Farmers should plant more sugarcane crops to avoid the shortage of the crop for milling, said Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, reports The Star.

The sugarcane milling has been suspended for four months due to a shortage of cane crops in the country.

“Suspension of sugarcane milling will have a negative impact on those families depending on cane farming as a source of income,” he said.

“Out of 15,000 acres of land owned by Mumias Sugar, only 500 acres have been used,” he added.
