Kenya to import 90,000 tonnes of sugar from Uganda

Kenya has decided to import 90,000 tonnes of sugar from Uganda and 160,000 tonnes from other countries after exhausting Comesa import quota allotted to it.

Uganda had earlier informed Kenya through the Uganda Manufacturers Association that it has sufficient sugar to meet the domestic need as well as to export sugar.

Kenya has been importing 350,000 tonnes from within EAC and Comesa due to a widened deficit in its local market.

Betty Maina, the Kenya Cabinet Secretary for Industry, Trade and enterprise development said, “We are planning to import 90,000 tonnes of sugar from Uganda.”
