Madurai: Sugarcane cultivation declines in Madurai district

Madurai, Tamil Nadu: The farmers from Madurai are turning away from sugarcane cultivation as they claim it is no more giving them profitable return. The area under sugarcane cultivation has shrunk drastically. The farmers are discouraged due to delay in cane payments coupled with the financial crisis due to Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the news report published in Thehindu.com, N Palanichamy, president, Tamil Nadu Sugarcane Farmers’ Association, said, “The National Cooperative Sugar Mill at Alanganallur has not paid sugarcane dues to cane growers, due to which farmers are facing financial trouble. They have stopped cultivating sugarcane.”

T. Vivekanandan, Joint Director, Agriculture said, “We are taking steps to ensure that the sugar mills clear the pending cane dues.”
