Nepal: Sugar mills under pressure; start paying cane dues

Kathmandu, Nepal: As farmers continue their agitation, the Sriram Sugar Mills has cleared Rs 250 million to the farmers in the last two days – last Friday and Sunday.

The mill has issued a statement stating that the mill has released Rs 160 million on Friday and Rs 80 million on Sunday. The amount has been transferred to the bank accounts of the cane farmers.

As per the data made available by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, the Sri Ram Mill owes Rs 350 million to the cane farmers and the mill is yet to pay Rs 100 million to the cane farmers.

The farmers are yet to receive Rs 80.4 million from Lumbini Sugar Mill, Rs 170 million from Annapurna Sugar Mills and Rs 47 million from Indira Sugar Mills.

Farmers are continuing their agitation in Kathmandu demanding clearing of pending cane arrears from the sugar mills.
