NSI gets success in producing ‘Super Sugar’

National Sugar Institute in its endeavour to produce healthier and nutritive sugars, got success in producing “Super Sugar” containing carbohydrates, protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins, dietary fibre and minerals. After three years of consistent efforts at the institute and at the end of sugar factory, the product has been developed by Shri Rajesh Singh, Deputy General Manager (Quality Control), Triveni Sugar & Industries Ltd. While pursuing his Fellowship in Sugar Technology under the supervision of Prof. Narendra Mohan, Director, National Sugar Institute, Kanpur. The “Super Sugar” has been produced by blending the “Natural Cane Sugar” with Spirulina and Basil under controlled conditions.

Spirulina, is a microalgae was discovered in 16th Century been used as food in the Valley of Mexico. Found in lakes, sea and other waters, it contains very high protein content of the order of 60-70%, essential fatty acids, minerals like potassium, calcium, iron, zinc and phosphorous, vitamins as B1, B2, B3, B6, B9, B12, C, E, D, other carbohydrates and antioxidants. It is often termed as “Wonderful Future Food Source”. Spirulina is used as powder, capsule or as cake and thus finds its application in food industry, pharma industry and animal husbandry too.

Other added ingredient, Basil, commonly known as Tulsi in the country, is known as king of herbs and has wide range of applications due to its distinct flavour and medicinal properties. It is also a rich source of vitamin A, B9, C & K, calcium, iron, copper, manganese and amino acids.

We used food grade Spirulina powder conforming to Bureau of Indian Standards and natural Basal extract and after series of trials decided to keep ratio of Spirulina to Basal as 1:5. The process included, preparation of pre-mix, dosing into bulk, mixing in specially designed cone blender and drying under controlled conditions. Depending upon the Recommended Dietary Allowance, particularly of protein and considering the average intake of sugar, the quantity of pre-mix to be added, said Mr. Rajesh Singh.

We have used cheap and abundantly available sources for producing the “Super Sugar” which is surely to find its place in nutraceutical industry. Spirulina offers many health benefits as it may lower cholesterol & tri-glycerides levels, reduce blood pressure, could be effective against anaemia and improve muscle strength. While Basal is commonly known for its medicinal values for antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti cancer, other healing properties including relief from cough. So, the blend of Spirulina and Basil will offer health benefits while satisfying the taste preferences and good shelf life.
