Pending cane dues: Sugar mills in Maharashtra face action

Pune: According to the news report published in Indianexpress.com, for the first time in the current season, the state sugar commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad has issued orders to attach properties of 13 sugar mills for failure to pay Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) to the cane farmers.

As per the sugarcane control act, the mills should clear cane dues to the farmers within 14 days of crushing their cane else they have to face action for delay in paying cane dues. Last season the mills managed to clear cane bills but for the on-going crushing season, the sluggish sale of sugar has impacted their financial situation, therefore they are unable to pay cane dues.

Out of 13 sugar mills that have not paid cane dues, 7 are from Solapur district and two each are from Osmanabad and Sangli and one each in Aurangabad and Beed district.
