Phagwara sugarcane farmers threaten to intensify agitation over pending cane dues

Sugar cane growers from Phagwara and its surrounding areas have declared their intent to escalate their protest should the management of the local sugar mill fail to settle outstanding payments owed to them, reported The Tribune.

A meeting convened by the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Doaba) at Gurdwara Sukhchain Sahib on Thursday addressed this concern. Manjit Singh Rai, president of the union, presided over the gathering.

Following the meeting, BKU (Doaba) general secretary Satnam Singh Sahni informed the media that the union would extend a grace period until mid-April for the payment of arrears. Should the payments remain outstanding beyond this deadline, the BKU will formulate its next course of action during the forthcoming meeting scheduled for April 15 in Phagwara.
