Philippines: President Marcos approves importation of more sugar

Taking note of the expected shortfall in the local production of sugar, President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr. approved the importation of more sweeteners.

As per his statement issued by Marcos through the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), the decision on sugar importation was made during his meeting with SRA officials.

During the meeting, SRA officials stated that the overall sugar supply this year will include the 2.4 million metric ton (MMT) as well as 440,000 metric tons (MT) sugar to be imported under Sugar Order (so) No. 6, and the 64,050 MT under the Minimum Access Volume (MAV) mechanism.

The total sugar production in the country will be not sufficient to cover the 3.1 MMT of domestic demand and the SRA stated that the country needs to import around 100,000 MT to 150,000 MT of sugar to fill the demand-supply gap.
