Punjab: Farmers block highway demanding pending cane dues

Phagwara: Sugarcane farmers under the banner of Bhartiya Kisan Union (Doaba) launched an indefinite dharna at the Phagwara Sugar Mill Chowk and blocked the Ludhiana-Jalandhar national highway demanding the pending cane dues immediately, reports Tribune India.

Farmers claim that they have not received the cane dues of Rs 72 crore including Rs 30 crore for the 2019-20 season, Rs 6 crore for the 2020-21 season and Rs 36 crore for the 2021-22 season.

Farmer leader Satnam Singh Sahni said that the they are allowing the vehicles of students and patients to pass the road to avoid any inconvenience. The agitation will continue till the sugar mills clear their pending cane dues, he said.

They held the sugar mills owners as well as the state government responsible for not providing their arrears despite four-five meetings with the representatives.

The Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had promised the farmers a few months ago that their dues will be cleared soon but the situation remains the same, they said.
