Punjab Pollution Control Board refuses to allow operations at Zira ethanol plant

Ferozepur: The ethanol plant at village Mansurwala in Zira has been denied consent to operate by the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), reports PTI.

The villagers had launched an agitation against the unit and after a month-long agitation; Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had ordered the closure of the unit in January.

After the board did not give clearance to the plant to operate, the management of the plant approached Punjab and Haryana High Court which had directed the PPCB to reconsider their plea.

In its latest order issued on Tuesday, the PPCB stated that in its earlier observations coupled with the inferences drawn in the water and sludge chemical report by the expert committees, it does not make a case in favour of the industry for operation of the unit.

The board stated that the excessive accumulation of heavy metals like cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, copper and arsenic in underground water released from the industry could disturb the balance of the environment.
