Rs 4.5 lakh fine slapped on sugar mill

Pune: Baramati Agro Sugar mill, a mill belonging to Nationalist Congress Party MLA Rohit Pawar, has been fined Rs 4.5 lakh by the state government for allegedly allowing sugarcane into its premises before officially starting cane crushing season, reports PTI.

The mill is located in Shetphalgadhe in Indapur tehsil in Pune and was accused of starting cane crushing operations before the date fixed by the state government and a video clip of cane being carried at the mill was submitted to the sugar commissionerate as proof.

The mill had brought 9000 tonnes of cane and the mill was fined Rs 500 per tonne taking it to Rs 45 lakh.

“The electronic evidence could not establish that the cane crushing was underway in the mill but the mill could not give proof of receipts given to farmers against the cane brought at the mill,” he added.
