Shamli: Shortage of cane cutters

Shamli, Uttar Pradesh: Sugar mills are all set to commence sugarcane crushing season, but there is a shortage of cane cutters in Shamli district.

According to the news report published in Amarujala.com, farmers claim they are facing problems in finding the sugarcane harvesters for cutting the cane. The available harvesters are demanding huge advances which they are unable to pay.

Most of the farm labourers in the district come from Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. Many labourers had gone to their natives during the lockdown and very few have returned to work. Most of them are not willing to return for work. However, the available workforce is demanding huge advances for cane cutting works.

Last year the rate of cane harvesting was Rs 40 per quintal. Now the labourers are demanding Rs 45-50 per quintal for the same work.
