Sugar farmers protest dramatically over pending cane dues

Sangrur: Like Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra, sugarcane farmers in Punjab too are awaiting for their sugarcane dues payment. The mounting cane arrear has put sugarcane farmers in financial distress. Therefore they have intensified their protests.

Two agitators protest dramatically by climbing on the chimney of the sugar mill and remained there for more than 30 hours to press for their demands. The agitators had blocked the gates of the mill, and no employees were allowed to enter in the mill premises.

They were later brought down after intervention of the police. The sugar mill owes around Rs 9.50 crore to the cane growers.

Jaswant Sinh Sandhu, GM of the sugar mill said, “Mill has paid Rs 2.50 crore till date. The payments were stopped since October 4 due to some issue, and soon all dues will be cleared.”
