Sugar mill in Mandya struggles to revive

Bangalore: Despite providing several packages, the financial distress of Mysugar mill in Mandya district continues. The mill set up by Bharat Ratna M Visvesvaraya in the year 1934 was regarded as the best sugar mill in Karnataka. Various efforts have been taken to revive this ailing sugar mill, but all in vain. This mill, which lasted for some time in the year 2017, was closed again. Due to this mill, Mandya district was once called the sugar bowl.

Karnataka is already impacted by drought, following which the sugarcane production is affected. Due to the closure of this mill, sugarcane farmers of the district are upset. The non-functioning of Mysugar and Pandavapura Sahakari Sakkare Karkhane (PSSK) made the situation worst for sugarcane farmers in Mandya and adjoining areas.

Earlier, former Karnataka CM CM Kumaraswamy had assured of initiating measures to revive the mills in Mandya, but yet there are no steps to revive the mills.

Sugarcane farmers in the state are also under stress as they have been waiting for the pending cane dues. Following which, they have intensified their protest against sugar mills and government.
