Sugar mills get stern warning

Muzaffarnagar: Sugarcane farmers are expressing deep anguish over pending cane arrears, following which government is taking various efforts to calm them down. On July 23, District Magistrate Selva Kumari J, along with senior officials, assessed the payment of dues to sugarcane farmers in Muzaffarnagar. While interacting with farmers, DM said authorities are working towards clearing all cane dues.

District authorities have set the deadline of August 31 for sugar mills to clear the arrears, and also warned of stern action in case of arrears non-payment.

In a setback to sugarcane farmers, Central government keeps (Fair and Remunerative Price) FRP of sugarcane for 2019-20 crushing season unchanged at Rs 275 per quintal for basic recovery rate of 10 per cent. Following which cane growers have expressed their dissatisfaction.

As per the latest report, sugar mills in India owe whopping Rs 15,222 crore for the current season. Due to non-payment of cane dues, farmers from various states have intensified their protest and putting pressure on the government to get their dues cleared.
