Bengaluru: Crop damage during recent floods will affect sugarcane production in Karnataka this year. C T Ravi, Sugar minister of state after meeting with Sugarcane Control Board said, “1.52 lakh hectares out of 5 lakh hectare sugarcane fields have been damaged due to floods. Some are partially and some fully damaged, which will impact sugarcane production.”

“We will allow sugar mills to commence cane crushing after Diwali. In the year 2018-19, 44.31 lakh tonne sugar was produced by crushing 410.65 lakh metric tonnes,” he said.

Flood has caused massive loss to the cane growers in Belagavi district. It is expected that, with the impact on sugarcane, it is likely to affect the sugar output in Karnataka.

Sugarcane farmers who are already stressed with pending sugarcane arrears are now in the state of shock and struggling to come back on a track after the flood. It has claimed not only lives but also caused damage to the properties, crops and others worth hundreds of crores.
