Sugar prices rise in Kenya

Within a week after Kenya imposed a ban on importation of sugar, the domestic market witnessed a spurt in the sugar prices. The Sugar Directorate has initiated an investigation to find out the reason behind the sudden hike in sugar prices.

Rosemary Owino, interim head of the Sugar Directorate said that the prices might rose due to sudden interruption of supply of sugar. But we are investigating the reasons behind a sudden spike of the sugar rates in the domestic market.

According to the media report, the government is also trying to figure out if there is any hoarding of the commodity involved in the shortage of sugar that might have caused a hike in domestic sugar prices,

Two weeks ago Peter Munya, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary (CS) had banned the import of sugar and had revoked the current import permits.
