Sugar prices in Kenya hit record high

The prices of sugar in Kenya reached a record level of KSh 500 per 2kg as per the data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), reports Tuko.

The prices have been increased due to the demand-supply gap in sugar supply as the government halted sugar milling in Western Kenya. The supermarkets and retail shops were selling sugar at KSh 240 and KSh 260 per kg now as against KSh 200 in May 2023.

For the first time in the country, a 2 kg packed sugar is sold at around KSh 490 to KSh 510, crossing the mark of KSh 500.

Recently the government has introduced an excise duty of KSh 5 per kg on imported sugar in the Finance Act 2023 which was implemented recently.
