Sugarcane farmers await payment of dues

Dehradun: Farmers who gave sugarcane to Iqbalpur sugar mill are in big trouble as they are yet to receive pending cane arrears. Despite agitation by the farmers many times, the mill failed to clear the cane dues. To make payment for cane arrears, administration while taking action decided to make sugar auction. But in spite of that, sugar auction failed many time.

Sugar mill owes sugarcane arrears around Rs 180 crore. The arrears are pending with the mill from the last two years.

According to the media report, the Bhagwanpur tehsil, which has the responsibility of doing sugar auction, has yet not received any orders regarding the auction. Therefore it is still ambiguous when sugar auction will take place. Several months ago, the department issued RC of Iqbalpur sugar mill and ordered the officials of Bhagwanpur tehsil to auction the sugar.

As sugar mills are suffering from financial scarcity, Central government introduced various measures for them. Recently, with an aim to reduce the sugar surplus and low down cane arrears, the government has approved the sugar export subsidy. Sugar mills across India claim that due to depressed sugar prices and sugar surplus they are facing financial crunch and therefore are unable to clear the cane dues.
