Sugarcane farmers demand to start Hemavati sugar factory

Hasaan, Karnataka: Sugarcane farmers and Congress workers staged a protest in front of the Hemavati sugar factory at Srinivasapura in Channarayapatna taluka demanding to start the mill. The factory has stopped operations since January 2016.

According to the protesters, the factory started operations in 1984. The management of the mill had handed over the mill to the private operator to improvise the factory’s crushing capacity. However, the private body had failed to meet the conditions.

MA Gopalaswamy, Congress MLC said, “Sugarcane farmers have been affected due to the closure of the sugar mill. We have given a deadline of September 30 to start the mill. If the factory fails to keep the deadline, we will launch a march from Channarayapatna to the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Hassan the next day.”
