Sugarcane farmers facing tough time selling their produce

Karnal: Shahbad sugar mill stopped operations after a 52-year-old employee found positive for Covid-19. This is increased problems of sugarcane growers from Kurukshetra area. The mill was yet to crush 6 lakh quintals sugarcane grown over 2000 acre land.

According to the news report published in Hindustan Times, the mill had sign contract with two private Sugar Mills to crush the remaining sugarcane however one of these mills refused to do so.

“Now the sugarcane will be crushed in one of the private mill Saraswati sugar mill from Yamuna Nagar and in Cooperative sugar mill from Kaithal,” send an official from the Mill.

This will increase the transportation cost of sugarcane growers. Sugarcane farmers claim that now they have to carry cane 85 km in Yamunanagar and asking who will bear the transportation cost.

Sushil Kumar, managing director of the Shahbad sugar mill said, “We have made arrangements for crushing remaining cane with nearest available sugar mills and our priority is to crush sugar. But, as of now, there is no discussion to compensate the farmers for selling their produce to other mills.
