Sugarcane farmers not getting right price for their produce: MLA

Dharamsala: Sugar mills from Punjab are paying less to the cane farmers from Indora in Kangra district, said Rita Dhiman, BJP MLA from Indora.

According to the news report published in Tribuneindia.com, she brought a calling attention notice stating that the sugarcane farmers of Indora in Kangra district are not getting the right price for their produce. The mill at Mukerian is paying Rs 360 per quintal to the farmers of Punjab but paying Rs 325 per quintal to the farmers from Indora, she said.

She said, “The sugarcane farmers are also getting delayed payment from the mills in Punjab. The government should decide on setting up a sugar mill in Kangra district.”

In a reply to the calling attention notice, Varider Kanwar, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayats, said the cane produced by the farmers in Indora was not enough to run a sugar mill. So, there was no proposal to set up a sugar mill in Kangra district.”

Kanwar assured to take steps to ensure farmers get right price of their produce.
