Sugarcane farmers threaten to immolate over pending cane arrears

Roorkee: Controversy over Iqbalpur sugar mill is refusing to die down. On Tuesday, farmers from Roorkee have sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttarkhand Chief minister threatening to immolate themselves over pending cane arrears from Iqbalpur sugar mill. The mill owes around Rs 200 crore to sugarcane farmers.

In spite of assurance from Uttarakhand government that all cane dues would be cleared by September 30, sugarcane farmers have yet not received the sugarcane arrears. Despite agitation by the farmers many times, the mill failed to settle the dues. This has enraged the farmers and they allege that both government and sugar mill is cheating them.

Sugarcane farmers claim that their financial condition is worsening day-by-day as they have not received dues from mills. Cane growers assert that they are unable to feed their families, nor able to pay school fees of their children. After mill failed to pay arrears, the government started auctioning of the mill’s sugar but failed to attract the buyers due to stringent bidding rules.
