Sugarcane harvesters from Maharashtra want to come back home

Theni, Tamil Nadu: As many as 84 sugarcane harvesters from Maharashtra staying in a private building since lockdown staged a demonstration demanding to let them go home.

According to a news report published in The Hindu, officials said these cane harvesters including women and children had come here during harvesting season for working at a sugar mill. They were about to leave after completing their work when the lockdown was imposed and they stucked here. They were engaged in sugarcane cutting on a contract basis. The mill has made arrangements for their stay and food in a private building.

The district administration is routinely enquiring about them and the health department is conducting periodic check-up. The officials convinced the agitating people that the arrangement will be made to send them home.
