Sugarcane price to increase in Karnataka?

Bengaluru: Farmers have been demanding to increase sugarcane price, and now the state government is also looking into the matter. Minister Patil Munenakoppa assured farmers that he will hold a meeting with Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai soon to decide on increasing sugarcane price for the 2022-23 season, reports The Indian Express.

Speaking to reporters after conducting a meeting with Raitha Sangha members, he said, “Farmers want sugarcane price to Rs 5,500 per tonne as the cost of transportation and harvesting has become a burden on them We will give them sweet news soon.”

“I will be conducting a meeting with the Sugarcane Control Board members on Wednesday to address the issues raised by farmers regarding the exploitation over harvesting and transportation charges apart from weighing of cane,” Minister said.

“Sugar mills including co-operative and private have cleared 99.9% of the cane dues to the farmers and they are yet to clear only Rs 11 crore of the total Rs 19,634 crore,” he further added.

Kuruburu Shanthakumar said, “We have given the government a deadline of October 20 to resolve the issue else we will relaunch our struggle for a hike in sugarcane price.”
