Amid the domestic markets experiencing the shortfall of the sugar, local sugar factory Kilombero has resumed operations expecting to produce 127,000 tonnes sugar during 2020-21 season.
This has brought relief in Tanzania as sugar prices have skyrocketed due to shortage of the commodity in the market. Kilombero had suspended operations during the last few months for maintenance purpose.
The mill is now prepared to start operations during this crushing season which commenced from May 19. The mill is expected to crush 1,328,445 tonnes of sugarcane this season. The mill will procure 600,000 tonnes cane from Kilombero valley and remaining from its own farms.
