Uncertainty over re-opening of Kovur Cooperative sugar factory

Nellore: The state government has not taken any steps for the revival of the Kovur Cooperative sugar mill resulting in uncertinity of its starting, reports The New Indian Express.

No steps have been taken for the revival of the mill despite the assurance by the local legislators to restart it.

The mill set up in February 1979 in Pothireddypadu village has stopped operations since 2013 which has affected more than 10,000 farmers from Kovur, Vidavaluru, Kodavaluru, Indukurupeta and other regions.

The mill had extended its crushing capacity from 1,250 to 2,500 tonnes per day in 2001 as there was surplus cane production in the region.

Farmers started turning away from cane cultivation from 2002 to 2005 due to some reasons that resulted in lowering cane output. Slowly the mill had to stop crushing due to the lack of availability of cane for crushing.
