UPL Sustainable Agriculture Solutions Ltd (UPL SAS), a renowned provider of sustainable agricultural products and solutions, has joined forces with Olam Agri to introduce an innovative initiative called ‘Shashwat Mithaas.’ The main objective of this program is to promote sustainable and consistent sugarcane production throughout India. The primary focus will be on benefiting farmers within the Olam Sugar Mill catchment area, specifically Channehatti-Rajgoli, Kolhapur, Maharashtra, by achieving a remarkable 15 per cent increase in yield per acre and generating additional income.
The ‘Shashwat Mithaas’ initiative is geared towards significant water conservation, targeting a 30 per cent reduction in water usage through the adoption of efficient irrigation practices. Additionally, it aims to curtail fertilizer consumption by 25 per cent, while concurrently increasing crop yield and enhancing soil health. In its initial phase, the program will encompass 2,000 acres in the first year, and there are ambitious plans to expand its coverage to a substantial catchment area of 70,000 acres in the future.
In this collaborative effort, farmers will receive comprehensive support, encompassing a range of solutions and services. This package includes UPL’s innovative climate-smart technology, ZEBA, which is integrated into the ProNutiva package, along with training in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), mechanization assistance, and access to the nurture.farm platform, ensuring full traceability. To showcase the effectiveness of these solutions and the approach, the establishment of 25 model plots has already been accomplished, as reported in a press release by UPL SAS.
