Uttarakhand: Farmers face labour shortages for sugarcane planting and harvesting

Roorkee, Uttarakhand: Farmers in region are facing a labor shortage for sugarcane planting and harvesting, which is causing major disruptions to their operations, reported Live Hindustan.

The farmers say that the shortage is due to several factors, including the government’s policies, which have made farming less profitable. As a result, many young people are leaving the agricultural sector for other opportunities.

The shortage is having a significant impact on farmers’ ability to get their crops planted and harvested on time.

After harvesting the standing mustard crop in the fields, prepare the fields completely for sugarcane planting, and then sugarcane planting takes place. Along with these tasks, after harvesting the standing sugarcane crop in the fields, it is necessary to transport it to the jaggery unit or sugar mill, etc. For all these tasks, farmers need the help of laborers. Farmers say that at this time, laborers are charging ₹500 for a day’s work. Despite paying around ₹700 to ₹800 per day to laborr for sugarcane planting and harvesting work, farmers are still unable to find laborers on time. As a result, farmers are unable to complete their work on time in their fields.
