Akhilesh Yadav slams UP government over pending cane dues

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has slammed the Uttar Pradesh government over pending cane dues. He held the government responsible for the ‘worsening condition of farmers in the state’.

Yadav said, “The cane crushing season is in the final phase and the mills have not yet procured the sugarcane crop which is still standing in the fields. The mills still owe arrears worth Rs 20,000 crore to the cane farmers. There is also a provision of interest on the arrears, but when the principal is not being paid, who will pay the interest?”

Uttar Pradesh has witnessed lower sugar output in the ongoing season as compared to the previous one. The mills in the state have produced 110.16 lakh tonnes of sugar till May 31, 2021. During the same period last year, the mills had produced 125.46 lakh tonnes of sugar.
