Balrampur Chini Mills Limited, one of India’s largest integrated sugar mill complexes, is embarking on a forward integration and business diversification journey with the launch of its upcoming Polylactic Acid (PLA) manufacturing venture. The company emphasises that this initiative aligns seamlessly with the sustainability objectives set forth by the Hon’ble Prime Minister in the fight against climate change.

With an estimated phased investment of Rs. 2000 crores over approximately 2.5 years, the project is anticipated to reach completion within 30 months. This endeavour marks the establishment of India’s first industrial bio-plastic plant.

Stefan Barot will spearhead the new venture as the President (Chemicals). He expressed the company’s commitment to pioneering an industry-first approach, reducing carbon emissions, and showcasing innovation and environmental consciousness by minimising reliance on fossil fuels in plastic production.

Avantika Saraogi, Executive Director of Balrampur Chini Mills Limited, emphasised that the PLA project reflects the company’s dedication to environmentally conscious practices and responsible manufacturing. “We see the utilisation of sugar as a raw material in PLA production as pivotal for a sustainable future. Through the PLA project, our goal is to not only drive financial growth but also redefine standards in India’s sustainable economic landscape”, she added.
