Bangladesh: Government mills unable to pay workers salary as unsold sugar stocks pile up at warehouses

Dhaka: The workers from sugar mills in Bangladesh are demonstrating for their pending salaries as the mills are unable to pay them due to dip in sugar sale in Market.

57,065 tonnes of sugar worth Tk 342 crore remains unsold with the 15 sugar mills under Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation. According to the media report, BSFIC officials said dealers of the sugar corporation were also showing reluctance to buy sugar from the corporation as the price of the imported sugar is lower in the local market that that of BSFIC’s product.

The employees and workers associated with Thakurgaon sugar mill had recently agitated demanding their salaries that are pending from the last three months.
