Bangladesh: State-owned sugar mills to start cane crushing from December 10

Sugar mills under the Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) will start sugarcane crushing from December 10. The decision was taken during the inter-ministerial meeting held virtually on Sunday. The meeting was presided over by Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun.

Out of the total of 15 state-owned sugar mills, nine will start operations as the government has decided to shut operations of six sugar mills. The government is planning to spend Tk 5,000 crore for modernization of these sugar mills, stated a statement issued by the industrial ministry.

The workers of closed sugar mills will be employed in the other nine sugar mills till non-operational mills are revived to reduce losses and be commercially viable. The government will procure the sugarcane from the jurisdiction of these six mills for crushing.

The farmers have urged the government to run all sugar mills for this season so that they won’t find difficulty in selling their cane.
