Bangladesh: Sugarcane farmers protest against closure of sugar mill

The sugarcane farmers and workers have launched a protest in front of the mill’s gate against its closure. The agitators blocked the Pabna-Ishwardi road as a protest against the government’s decision to suspend sugarcane crushing in Pabna sugar mills for the on-going season. Pabna sugar mill began operations on December 27, 1992.

The agitators have stated that they will intensify their protest if the government fails to cancel their decision regarding suspension of crushing from sugar mills.

According to the local media report, the government plans to close the mill located at Dashuria union under Ishwardi Upazila of Pabna as it has incurred a loss of more than Tk 400 crore in 20 years.

The letter in this regard has been sent by the Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation to the ministry. The mill will be closed down if the ministry decides to close it.

Five other sugar mills are as well on cards for closure. It includes mills in Kushtia, Rangpur, Shampur, Panchagarh and Setabganj.
