Cane crushing license only after confirming no pending arrears

Kolhapur: Sugar commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad assured the delegation of farmers’ organisation ‘Ankush’ that met him that his office would grant the cane crushing license to the sugar mills that have fully paid FRP to the farmers. They have demanded to block licenses of the mills that have failed to pay FRP to farmers.

“We cannot stop any mill from getting the crushing license but will ensure and give priority to the mill that has fully paid FRP to farmers,” said Gaikwad.

The rule mandates that FRP amount should be deposited to the cane growers bank accounts within 14 days after the sugarcane harvest is handed over to the mills’ owners, but they failed to do so. Sugar mills claim low sugar prices and poor financial condition as a reason in delay in clearing the cane dues.
