Keeping in view the interests of sugarcane farmers, Commissioner, Cane and Sugar, Shri Sanjay R. Bhoosreddy has issued advisory to farmers in accordance with the suggestions given by the Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research (IISR) for the protection and management of sugarcane crop during the fluctuations of the season.

Providing detailed information in this regard, Shri Bhoosreddy said that due to being a cash crop, most of the farmers of the state cultivated, sugarcane crop over a wide area. Every year, due to water logging, flooding or drought in sugarcane cultivation, there is a disruption in sowing and weeding of sugarcane. Therefore, by adopting measures for management and safety of sugarcane cultivation, the ill effects of weather can be avoided.

Cane Commissioner told that in those areas where there is a possibility of drought or there is no rain for a long period in the rainy season, in such areas sowing should be done with drought tolerant varieties such as Co.lk 94184, Co.lk 12209, Cos. 08279 etc. In sugarcane crop, planting of sugarcane with laying trash between the rows does not require frequent irrigation. Adoption of drip irrigation or spraying method will provide more production with water savings. If the sugarcane leaves begin to wilt during drought, then Before lifesaving irrigation, spraying the crop by 5% solution of potash fertilizer in water reduces the harmful effects of drought.

He said that during the condition of waterlogging, sowing of varieties like- co.lk 94184, cosa 9530, cosa 96436, co.lk 12207 is recommended. Autumn Sowing of sugarcane in waterlogged areas is best, but if autumn sowing is not possible, then early sowing of sugarcane should be done in the spring season. Before sowing, sugarcane seed should be treated by immersing in 0.2% solution of Carbendazim for 20 minutes and fertilizers must be used before the rainy season.

Spraying 5% solution of potash in standing Cane crop after waterlogging increases the crop growth and reduces outbreaks of pests and diseases. If there is a system of drainage, by the middle of June, mud plating must be done on the sugarcane rows, Due to which drains are formed for drainage and sugarcane is saved from falling. It is necessary to stop the water of one field from going to another field, otherwise there is a possibility of spreading the disease in the whole area during the outbreak of red rot disease. sugarcane crop should be supplied to the sugar mill or Khandasari unit soon after the water has drained from the waterlogged area.

The Cane Commissioner has directed to set up flaxes of the protective measures of sugarcane cultivation described in the advisory at the sugar mill gates and departmental offices and for wide publicity among sugarcane farmers through handbills, wall paintings and daily newspapers.
