China: Armyworm may affect sugar production

Shanghai: The severity of armyworm pest is likely to increase this year said China’s agriculture ministry stating that the prevention and control measure will be more aggressive.

The statement issued by the ministry stated that the pest is expected to affect around 100 million mu (6.67 million hectares) of corn produced area and other crops like sugarcane, sorghum and winter wheat.

It was first detected in China in January 2019 and has spread across China’s southern and southwestern areas. If this crop-eating pest affects sugarcane, then it may harm sugar production in the country.
