Delegation Meets CM Fadnavis Over Sugar Crisis

Mumbai: Leaders of Maharash-tra’s sugar industry, along with CM Devendra Fadnavis, will meet PM Narendra Modi to demand relaxations for the sector which is facing a crisis.

A delegation of the state sugar body and leaders from the sugarcane belt met Mr Fadnavis and put forth their demands. They asked that the government intervene immediately to ease the situation.

The delegation that met Mr Fadnavis demanded that the state government provide different relaxations for the survival of the sugar industry. The demands included the state government providing the price to farmers in two installments; a transport subsidy for domestic sales; the marketing federation buying 10 lakh metric tonne of sugar at `3,200 per quintal; starting the 2018-19 sugarcane season from October 1; cancellation of energy tax of `1.20 on energy co-generated by sugar mills and so on.

On his part, CM assured that the state will escalate the issue to the centre and that he will personally request an appointment with the PM.
