DFPD directs sugar mills to fill information related to jute packaging on NSWS portal by January 10, 2024

The Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD), in a communication to sugar mills, has directed them to fill out information related to jute packaging in the P-II form on the NSWS portal by January 10, 2024.

The DFPD’s letter also highlights that despite advising strict compliance of 20 per cent of the total production of sugar to be mandatorily packed in the jute packaging material, there has been no response from any sugar mills so far.

“All sugar mills are hereby directed to comply the directions issued by this Directorate for mandatory jute packaging of 20% of the total production of sugar and furnish the information thereof to this Directorate through email at sostat.dsvo@gov.in and sugarcontrol-fpd@gov.in. Non-receipt of the information will be viewed seriously and will attract penalty in the form of deduction of monthly domestic release quota of sugar,” the letter reads further.

Earlier, millers urged the government to fully exempt sugar from compulsory jute bag packaging under the Jute Packaging Materials Act 1987, citing potential increased costs and operational challenges.
